Gordon Price Music - celebrating 51 years of serving Edmonton’s music community .
A unique store in the music industry -- still in the same location, still family-owned, and still independent -- Gordon Price Music boasts an outstanding print music department, cool music giftware and boutique, the funkiest mix of traditional instruments and cutting edge technology, and the best retail staff around. Our store staff consists of well-educated musicians, most with post-secondary music degrees. They are teachers, performers and life-long students, who are constantly expanding their musical horizons, and eager to share their passion and knowledge with our customers.
We love music, and it shows. We offer a welcoming and warm environment that makes every musician feel at home. Whether you are a beginner, a seasoned professional, or somewhere in between, Gordon Price Music is here to serve your music needs.
A Brief History of Gordon Price Music
Gordon Price Music was founded by Gordon Chatham Price, a respected musician and teacher with degrees in both piano and violin. He saw the need for a music store near the University of Alberta, and in 1958 opened up a small store on Whyte Avenue. What began as a small store front staffed by family has grown into a company with locations in 4 cities and 3 provinces, with over 70 employees.
Warren Price (Gordon’s son) now owns the business, and still oversees the operations of the entire chain, which includes the original Gordon Price Music, and sister store Mother’s Music.
The original Gordon Price Music store carried instruments and sheet music, as well as records and record players. As the Rock n’ Roll era took hold, product lines expanded into electric guitars, amps and sound systems. Print music and method books have remained a cornerstone of the store’s business, and Gordon Price Music boasts one of the best-stocked print departments in Western Canada. We continually look for the best pedagogical and instructional materials, and value the input and suggestions of those who teach with those materials.
Mother’s Music, our sister store, opened its first location in Edmonton in 1973 to serve the growing rock and pro performing market. A few years later Mother’s Music Calgary opened, and we have now expanded into both Saskatoon and Winnipeg. Mother’s Music has become the pro shop of choice among musicians looking for an independent retailer.
Gordon Price Music continually strives for excellence in product choice and customer service. See Magazine’s 2008 Best of Edmtonton Readers Poll voted Gordon Price Music the #1 music instrument store in Edmonton, and our Mothers Music locations have also been recipients of local consumer choice awards. Owner Warren Price was honoured in 2007 by the Music Industries Association of Canada (MIAC) in recognition of 50 years of service to the Canadian music retail industry.
50 years after first opening, Gordon Price Music has expanded greatly from the original tiny store front, but we are still on Whyte Avenue, and we remain a proudly independent music store.
We look forward to seeing you soon.
